Special Envoy of the Chinese Government and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei Visits India

On January 5, 2009, special envoy of the Chinese government and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei met with Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukerjee and held talks with Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon in New Delhi.

He said as a close neighbor of South Asia, China is concerned about the development of situation in the region. India and Pakistan are both friendly neighbors of China. China hopes South Asia to maintain peace and stability, and hopes that both India and Pakistan will start from the overall situation of peace and development of the two countries as well as the common target of counter-terrorism of the international community to properly handle relevant issues between the two countries through dialogue and consultations. It is not only in the common interest of the two countries and their peoples and conducive to regional peace and prosperity, but also serves as a common aspiration of the international community.

The Indian side briefed on their positions and proposals on the South Asian situation and the relations between India and Pakistan. They noted that terrorism is a public hazard of the human society and to combat terrorism is a consensus shared by the international community. India has no intention of escalating the tensions in South Asia and is ready to work with the international community including China to strengthen cooperation, combat terrorism and safeguard peace and stability of the region.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on furthering China-India strategic cooperative partnership, agreeing that under the current situation, both sides should continuously deepen cooperation, expand consensus and jointly cope with the international financial crisis in a bid to push for sustained, stable and sound development of China-India relations.

During the meeting, He Yafei delivered a letter from Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to Mukerjee.

On the same day, He also met with Indian National Security Advisor M. K. Narayanan and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
