Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang's Remarks on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Visit to China

Q: What are the arrangements for State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit? How will it affect China-Myanmar relations?

A: During State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to China, Chinese leaders will meet and hold talks with her for exchanges of views on the bilateral relationship and issues of common interest. Apart from Beijing, she will also visit other cities.

China-Myanmar relationship is in a sound state of growth. It will be the first visit to China by a leader of Myanmar following the establishment of its new government, and thus is of great significance to promoting China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation in the new era. It is believed that the visit will help enhance strategic communication, deepen pragmatic cooperation, increase amity among the people, further advance the bilateral relationship and deliver more benefits to people from both sides.

Q: It is learnt that State Counsellor is a post newly created by this government of Myanmar. Are there any special considerations behind China’s arrangements for the reception of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi?

A: As is known to all, State Counsellor is ranked second only to the President among all the posts in the state organs of Myanmar. With that and China’s common practices in mind, and with reference to visits to other countries by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as State Counsellor, it was decided after communication between the two sides that Premier Li Keqiang will be the one who invites State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for the visit and holds talks with her.
